Choosing SenseCAP LoRaWAN sensors for farm use

By Techmorrow3 min read

Different farms need different data. Some plots only need air temperature and humidity, while others also need soil or light readings. This article compares the SenseCAP LoRaWAN devices listed on the TMRX product pages to help match them to the job.

Summary in 3 lines

To watch air conditions across a plot, start with the S2101 or the S2120 weather station; for soil or light, use the S2104 or S2102. If you already have RS485/MODBUS sensors, the S2100 data logger can send their data over LoRaWAN. Every sensor needs a gateway to receive its signal, such as the SenseCAP M2 for AS923.

What each sensor measures

The details below come from the specifications on the TMRX product pages (as of 29 October 2026). S2101 air temperature and humidity: Sensirion SHT4x IC, accuracy ±0.2°C / ±1.8% RH, range -40 to +85°C and 0–100% RH, Li-SOCl2 battery rated for about 10 years, up to 10 km transmission range, AS923 frequency (used in Thailand), set up over Bluetooth with the SenseCAP Mate app. S2104 soil moisture and temperature: soil moisture 0–100% and temperature -40 to 85°C, set up over Bluetooth. S2102 light: 0–160000 lux with 1 lux resolution. S2120 8-in-1 weather station: wind (speed 0–60 m/s and direction), temperature, humidity, UV index, light intensity, barometric pressure and rainfall, with a 19,000 mAh Li-Ion battery rated for about 5+ years, AS923, set up over Bluetooth. S2100 data logger: connects up to 3 RS485/MODBUS sensors, lithium battery rated for 5+ years, AS923. All of the above are rated IP66.

The SenseCAP M2 gateway

LoRaWAN sensors send their readings by radio to a gateway before the data reaches the platform. The SenseCAP M2 is an indoor LoRaWAN gateway built on the SEMTECH SX1302 chip, with AS923, Ethernet and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth setup through an app, and 5V DC power over USB-C. Listed coverage is about 2 km in urban areas and about 10 km in open areas, and it supports hundreds of sensors. Because it is an indoor unit, place it where power and internet are available and the signal is good. Real-world range depends on the site.

Choosing by the job

Air across the plot: the S2101 suits multiple air temperature and humidity points. If you want wind, rain, UV and pressure at one spot, the S2120 combines them in a single unit. Soil conditions: the S2104 measures soil moisture and temperature, suited to tracking spot locations in a plot. Light: the S2102 measures 0–160000 lux, useful for comparing zones such as open ground and shaded areas. Existing RS485/MODBUS sensors: the S2100 acts as the bridge to LoRaWAN, with up to 3 sensors connected. You do not need to buy everything at once. One gateway plus the sensors that answer your main questions is a reasonable start, and measuring points can be added later.

How this relates to TMRX

All the products above are described on the TMRX product pages and are available by pre-order, with an estimated wait of about 7–14 days. If you are unsure which sensor to start with or how many gateways you need, you can contact the TMRX team to talk it through based on your actual site before ordering.
